The first question on any SUV call is the drivetrain. A front-wheel-drive crossover tows much like a car. A part-time 4x4 can often be shifted to two-wheel drive or neutral for transport. A full-time all-wheel-drive SUV is the case where the answer may genuinely be that it needs all four wheels off the ground. Our dispatcher asks for the make, model and year at the start of the call for exactly this reason, and if wheel-lift transport isn't right for your vehicle you'll hear that on the phone, not after a truck arrives.

Weight matters too. A loaded three-row SUV is substantially heavier than a sedan, and that affects both the lift and the approach — particularly on a grade. Our drivers assess the slope, set the truck, and chock the vehicle before lifting rather than relying on a parking brake that may be part of the reason you called.

Height is the constraint people forget. Many San Diego parking structures — downtown, Mission Valley, the Hillcrest medical district, UTC-area garages — have clearance limits that an SUV with a roof rack or a rooftop carrier is already close to. Tell the dispatcher if your vehicle has a rack, box or bike carrier fitted, because it changes whether the truck can extract it from a structure and how the vehicle sits during transport.

The situations that put SUVs on our hook are the usual suspects plus a few specific ones. Failed batteries after a long airport stay. Transmission or transfer-case faults on the freeway. Flat tires where the spare is a temporary that won't safely carry the vehicle's weight. Overheating on the inland climbs toward Ramona, Alpine and Poway, where grade and summer heat combine. And post-collision moves where the vehicle is drivable in theory but shouldn't be driven.

Freeway shoulder work gets the full safety setup: cones, reflective triangles, high-visibility gear, protected work zone before anything is touched. That matters more with a large vehicle, which takes longer to load and blocks more of your line of sight while it happens.
