Cars are the vehicles wheel-lift towing was designed around. The lift cradles two wheels, the other two roll, and the whole operation takes minutes rather than the setup a full-size flatbed needs. For a sedan or compact stuck in a parking structure, a narrow alley or a packed residential street, that difference is the entire reason we get the vehicle out and you don't wait for a truck that can't fit.

Drivetrain is the one thing worth knowing before we arrive. On a front-wheel-drive car the front wheels get lifted; on a rear-wheel-drive car we lift the rear or use dollies. Most automatic transmissions tolerate short wheel-lift tows correctly performed, and our drivers know which end has to come off the ground for your vehicle. All-wheel-drive cars are the exception worth flagging on the phone — some genuinely need all four wheels off the ground, and if yours does, our dispatcher will tell you rather than sending a truck that shouldn't tow it.

Electric and hybrid cars deserve a mention of their own. Regenerative systems mean the driven wheels should not be spinning during transport on many models, and manufacturers publish specific towing instructions. Tell us the make, model and year when you call. If your vehicle's manual requires all four wheels off the ground, we'll say so on the phone instead of after the driver arrives.

The situations we tow cars out of are predictable: a transmission that quit in traffic, an engine that won't turn over in a driveway, a car after a minor collision, a vehicle that failed to start after weeks parked, a car stuck in an apartment garage with a flat that can't be changed in place, or a vehicle that needs to move from a tow-away lane before the city removes it. Where you park changes how we plan the job. Underground structures downtown and in Mission Valley have low ceilings and tight ramps. Alley garages in North Park and Hillcrest are barely truck-width. Beach lots in Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach are packed on weekends. Steep blocks in Bankers Hill and Serra Mesa put the car on real grade. Tell the dispatcher which of those you're in and the driver will arrive with a plan rather than an improvisation.
