Not every flat is fixable at the roadside, and it helps to know which kind you have. A slow leak from a nail in the tread with a usable spare in the trunk is a straightforward swap. A blown sidewall, a shredded tread, or a wheel that's been driven on while flat generally means the tire is finished — and if there's no spare, the vehicle needs a ride to a tire shop rather than a change. Many newer vehicles ship with an inflator kit instead of a spare, which does nothing for a sidewall failure.

Our roadside techs carry a floor jack and proper jack-point knowledge, a torque wrench so lug nuts go back to manufacturer spec rather than rattle loose or get overtightened, a portable compressor for tires that are low but intact, wheel chocks, and reflective safety gear. We locate the manufacturer's jacking points instead of lifting on a pinch weld or plastic trim, which is one of the more common ways a DIY roadside change causes real damage.

Freeway shoulders deserve extra caution. On I-5, I-805, I-15, I-8, SR-52, SR-56, SR-94, and SR-163, a shoulder change puts a person inches from lanes moving at seventy miles an hour. If your flat is on the traffic side of the vehicle, or the shoulder is narrow, the right call is often to tow the vehicle to a safe location and change it there. If your vehicle has a compact temporary spare — the small 'donut' — remember it carries speed and distance limits, usually around 50 mph and short-range use only. While you wait: pull as far off the roadway as you safely can, turn on your hazards, and get everyone out on the side away from traffic if you're on a shoulder. Don't try to drive on a fully flat tire to reach an exit — that usually destroys the wheel and turns a tire bill into a wheel bill. If you're in a parking lot or driveway, you're in a good spot; just note your location clearly when you call.
