Overheating is the breakdown we see most in San Diego, and it's the one where what you do in the first two minutes matters. If the temperature gauge climbs into the red, switch the air conditioning off and the heater on full — it pulls heat off the engine — and pull over as soon as it's safe. Shut the engine down. Do not open the radiator cap on a hot engine; the system is pressurised and the fluid is well above boiling. Then call. Driving an overheating engine even a short distance further is how a cheap repair becomes an engine replacement. Inland routes are where this bites hardest: the climbs on SR-67 toward Ramona, I-8 east through La Mesa and El Cajon, and the grades around Poway, Alpine and Escondido, especially in summer.

Transmission failure announces itself differently — slipping between gears, a refusal to engage drive or reverse, a burning smell, or a sudden loss of drive at speed. There is no roadside repair for it. If the vehicle won't hold a gear, don't try to nurse it home; a transmission that is failing can strand you somewhere much worse than where you are now. Get to a shoulder, hazards on, and call.

A no-start is the most ambiguous one, and worth diagnosing on the phone. If the engine cranks but doesn't fire, that's fuel, spark or a sensor — it's a tow. If it clicks rapidly or does nothing at all with dim dash lights, that's usually the battery, and a jump start may have you driving in ten minutes. If it starts and immediately dies, tow. Stalling while driving is the one to take most seriously in traffic. Steering gets heavy and braking gets harder once the engine stops, so steer for the shoulder while you still have momentum, get the hazards on, and don't attempt repeated restarts in a live lane. Once you're off the road, call and tell us whether you're clear of traffic — it changes how urgently we route the truck.

Where the breakdown happens shapes the response as much as what failed. Freeway shoulders on I-5, I-805, I-15, I-8, SR-52, SR-54, SR-94 and SR-163 get a full safety setup — cones, reflective triangles, high-visibility gear, protected work zone — before the driver touches the vehicle. Parking structures and apartment carports need our compact wheel-lift trucks rather than a flatbed. Rural East County roads out toward Lakeside and Alpine need a clear landmark or cross street, because addresses out there are hard to find after dark.

While you wait: stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on if you're on a freeway shoulder and it isn't safe to get out; get behind the guardrail if it is. Keep your phone reachable so the driver can confirm your position between exits. Gather keys, registration and anything you need out of the vehicle before we arrive so we can load and clear quickly.
